Fernando Alonso scores fastest time of first day of third pre-season test session in Barcelona
Fernando Alonso became the fastest driver of the first day of the third pre-season test session that started this morning in Barcelona.
The test session is taking place at Barcelona’s Catalunya circuit and it seems that the discussion of the day was the problem the FIA is currently facing regarding the season opening race that is expected to take place in Bahrain.
Since Bahrain is going through a tough political time and people there are protesting against their political system, it seems that the first race that is expected to take place in Bahrain might have to be replaced by another venue.
The session started in wet conditions and there was a distinct chill in the air as well later on. However, as soon as the track dried, more drivers came out for a run but the session came to an abrupt end after the stewards waved the red flags when Rubens
Barrichello was forced to park his car.
Other than that, Alonso’s first 15 laps were not as ‘eventful’ but it was bound to happen since the team was opting for constant-speed aero testing. But after returning on slick tyres, he scored the fastest lap of the session.
It seemed that Fernando Alonso’s every turn on the track was entertaining his home crowd. Jaime Alguersuari finished second fastest followed by Jenson Button as the third fastest driver of the first day of the session.
The defending world champion Sebastian Vettel finished out of the top three in 4th place while the seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher finished in the 6th place.
The drivers were unable to complete as many laps as they did in the previous two pre-season test sessions and as mentioned before, the results of the pre-season test sessions do not matter much as the teams are mostly trying to gather some data through these
runs for further evaluation for the upcoming season.
The season is expected to begin on the 13th of March in Bahrain but the confirmation of the event would be announced in a week’s time due to the current situation in Bahrain.
