Fernando Alonso shrugs KERS issue and focuses on Sunday’s race – Formula 1 news
Fernando Alonso said that the KERS technical fault has caused him to lose out on time during the qualifying for the Malaysian GP but maintains that his chances of a grid position are not in jeopardy.
Alonso starts the race on Sunday placed 8th on the grid, he would have started at 9th but a five grid penalty to Kimi Raikkonen means that he starts one place better. Ferrari has been suffering since the pre-season tests and are playing catch up with the
leaders of the grid.
So far it seems that McLaren will be leading from the front with Red Bull slightly behind and then fighting for the third spot will be Lotus and Mercedes.
Alonso said that the qualifying was good because he got everything he wanted out of the car, he explained that he had a KERS problem in Q3 but it is not going to cost him any places while conceding that the way to pole could have been more realistic had
that not happened.
He also talked about the weather conditions and how it will affect the race. Alonso said that it will take a lot of concentration and a bit of luck to pinpoint the right time for tyre changes but a dry race will require a lot of concentration as well to
get the most out of the car and the tyres as rubber degradation is high in Sepang. He added that to be amongst the points is imperative for the team to progress in the season and the main priority for him.
“The start and the first corner will be complicated, because so much is at stake then. We know we have a lot of work to do, especially on the aerodynamics of the car. Here, the performance is slightly better than in Australia, which proves we are working
in the right direction, but obviously we must move on in leaps and bounds if we want to fight for the front rows,” he said.
It will be interesting to see how Alonso fares on Sunday, as Ferrari hope to keep on improving the car as the season progresses.
