Fernando Alonso signs new Ferrari contract: Formula 1 Update
Former World Champion, Fernando Alonso has pledged his future with Ferrari, and put pen to paper on a new contract that will see him stay with the Italian team till the end of 2016. The announcement has come exactly 12 months after the Spaniard signed a
three year contract for Ferrari.
Alonso said that he is delighted to have made the deal with Ferrari, and believes that this is the right team for him in the long run. He said while speaking to reporters, "I am very happy to have reached this agreement, I immediately felt comfortable within
Ferrari and now it feels to me like a second family."
Alonso, in his one year at Ferrari, has time and again said that he feels completely at home at Ferrari and everyone in the team has made him feel very welcome. He has no doubts that he will end his F1 career at this team and is content with his decision.
"The intention is to finish my career with Ferrari and I can't imagine a better place to race," added Alonso. "I feel very privileged and very happy. Maybe in 2017 we can do another contract if I'm still quick and Ferrari are still happy with me."
According to Alonso, the decision for him wasn't hard to make and he had been in talks with the team for a few days now. The Spaniard went on to say that there was not much to think about as he knew that Ferrari was the right team for him and when both parties
agreed on one thing, the decision was easy.
Alonso, who missed out on the World Championship last season by just two points on the final day, said that being in a team that is stable is very necessary for any driver and being at Ferrari, he does get that sense of security that every driver dreams
of.
While commenting on the recent and past history of the team, Alonso said that in recent years, Ferrari has not finished lower than 3rd and that is something this team can offer. He said that in next few years he hopes to enjoy his time with the
Italian based outfit and also wants to win the World Championship more than once.
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo was also delighted by Alonso’s decision, and said that Fernando was one driver that had a winning mentality and that is what every team looks for. He added that the test of a driver’s character comes when the team is
not doing so well and is looking at the drivers for inspiration, and in last season, Fernando has proven that he can do exactly that.
Fernando Alonso won back to back World Champions with Renault, and is still looking for his first championship with Ferrari.
