Fernando Alonso still determined to win the 2012 championship – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso is still confident that he can win the F1 championship against Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel with only two races to go in the season.
“I trust my team, I trust myself and we are honest with ourselves,” Alonso said. “We know that we do not have the quickest package out there and we've been qualifying on average I think sixth or seventh, so qualifying is not our strong point. Our strong
point is to score more points than the others on Sunday, and I am sure we will do this over the next two races.”
Since the United States Grand Prix will be taking place on the new Circuit of the Americas, the driver thinks that it is always a disadvantage to race on a track of which you have no previous experience. However, he believes that the first practice session
on Friday will help the teams explore, moreover, all the teams have simulators to practice on so there will be not much difference.
Alonso added that his team is much more focused on applying their maximum efforts in this race. Their way of preparing remains unchanged but it is very important to have a good first practice in Austin so that they will be able to learn the track and the
tricks it has to offer. The team is aiming to score as many points as possible.
Even F1 commentator David Croft believes that Alonso has a good chance of snatching the title from Vettel. He thinks that his chances to overtake the Red Bull driver for the first position were really high during the Abu Dhabi GP, since Vettel was disqualified
to start from the pit lane.
However, Alonso did not avail that chance but only narrowed down the points difference from thirteen to ten. Croft said that it does not matter because his seven years in the sport have taught him to expect the unexpected.
He insisted that even if Alonso does not win, he will still maintain his loyalty to him. He was very excited about the prospect of the championship to remain undecided until the last race in Brazil.
