Fernando Alonso targets points for Australian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Fernando Alonso says that the first target for him Australian Grand Prix will be to secure points.
Alonso understands that the new Ferrari is having trouble and to be able to score points will be very important. The Spaniard was not able to make it to Q2 as his car spun off turn one as he was trying to make up for the time lost during the second part
of the qualifying.
Alonso while admitting that he made a mistake at turn one, he conceded that he was still unsure whether he would have made it through to Q3 with the troubling Ferrari anyway.
“I think I touched the grass. I obviously didn't realise when I was driving but looking at the TV the left tyres were on the grass so I spun putting the tyres there and qualifying finished unfortunately in the gravel. I don't know what the position would
be without the incident, maybe it was possible to go in to Q3, maybe not, because the times were very close. If you were in Q3 you'd have no new tyres for tomorrow so maybe at the end of the day it's a good compromise to be P12 with new tyres,” he said.
Alonso also revealed that even before the pre-season tests he was a bit sceptical over the car’s performance to challenge the sharp end of the grid.
He admitted that the Ferrari was just not quick or competitive enough to put up a fight for the top spots. Even now after the qualifiers it is very evident that the car is not competitive and this means that there is still a lot of work to do.
He added that the team will need to put in the extra work before the race and said that he has been working for the past 24 hours in the build up to the race and that is the only way to move ahead and improve.
It will be interesting to see how Ferrari on the whole performs during the race as Felipe Massa has also been struggling to keep the Ferrari in control.
