Fernando Alonso: the best car will win despite Pirelli, DRS, KERS and pit-stop strategy – Formula 1
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso recently commented that the best car on the grid will win the 2011 Formula 1 title despite the fact that Pirelli, Drag Reduction System, Kinetic Energy Recovery System and pit-stop strategy are regarded by many as the championship
deciding factors.
Two times Formula 1 champion, Alonso, said that, “As usual in F1, the quickest or best car will win the championship in the end. Strategy is important, maybe one or two races will be decided by a very good strategy.” He further added that the good pit strategy
will be helpful in one or two races, but over the course of 19 to 20 races, the fastest and the most reliable car will win.
Alonso stated that this season will be very different because the rules are the same for every team, the strategies will be secondary to the reliability of the car. “It is a difficult call and a difficult judgement that we will need to make. We will need
to be very open and very flexible in every race,” he said.
The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile or FIA, regulations has been criticised in the pre-season testing and a lot of drivers have suggested that changes made to the sport are meaningless. Drivers and officials have said that the DRS will be useless
because the Pirelli tyres degrade so quickly, thereby making the car slower any ways. The same is suggested for the KERS, which is why some drivers have suggested that it will be an extra weight to carry with no feasibility.
Many teams have said that the pit-crew will be very busy this year and there is a margin for races to be won or lost in the pits. Red Bull’s Team Principal, Christian Horner, has said recently that his team has often won races with their best pit-stops,
but talking about this season, he said that the cars will be in the pits for more than two times, so it makes even for every team.
The Formula 1 season opens in Australia within a couple of weeks and the FIA has promised to revise the regulations if they do not go well during the first few races.
