Fernando Alonso thinks Red Bull technical head Adrian Newey’s success is overrated – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has recently stated that Red Bull Racing technical director Adrian Newey’s contribution to the team’s success is ‘overrated.’
“In Formula 1, there is no magic, no genius who can do everything but still everyone talks about Newey. He really is very good and he has made a great car, but he was the same genius for the first five years and their cars were not so good,” he said.
There is no doubt that Newey is a genius but one has to admit that it is a team sport, not a one man show and a single person alone cannot make a difference like that in Formula 1.
The main reason why Newey is being ‘praised’ by the media for his contribution to RBR is that he was a part of McLaren and Williams as well when they won their titles and he did play a major role in those victories.
“To have success you need many things, including a group of intelligent people, budget, without just the right mix it is not possible. Newey would not go to Virgin and win the World Championship without the right structure,” added Alonso.
RBR are definitely the best team on the grid at the moment as they are extremely fast and consistent at the same time at almost all the venues while Ferrari and McLaren have pace, but lack consistency.
One has to admit though that Christian Horner and the two drivers of the team Mark Webber and the reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel have also played a major role in the team’s development and improvement which is the main reason why the team is so
successful at the moment.
Without their work, Newey or any one cannot make a championship winning team on his own in just a matter of a year or two.
However, Adrian Newey is one of the best technical directors in the history of the sport and his mind definitely plays a huge role in the team’s building and improvement during a Formula 1 season.
