Fernando Alonso tops tables in the final Free Practice session of
Monaco GP – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has topped the timings of the final Free Practice session of the 2011 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix.
The Spaniard carried out some tests for his car on the supersoft Pirelli tyres and in the process posted the fastest time which was 1 minute and 14.433 seconds. Luckily for the Spaniard, his Ferrari faced no problems in the final session and he heads into
the qualifiers on a high note.
Alonso’s teammate, Felipe Massa also managed to put his name among the top three finishers. The Brazilian also used the soft tyres and posted a fastest of 1 minute and 15.024 seconds while completing 19 laps.
Second fastest in the practice session was McLaren’s Jenson Button. The Brit was also on super soft tyres and posted a fastest time of 1 minute and 14.996 seconds. Button’s teammate Lewis Hamilton was sixth on the table with a fastest time of 1 minute and
15.386 seconds.
Fourth on the table was Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel with a fastest time of 1 minute and 15.245 seconds. Surprisingly for the Red Bull team, Vettel did not use the Drag Reduction System in the session and relied on pure pace of his car. The German was also
on soft tyres which means that in the qualifiers, something special can be expected of him.
Vettel’s teammate, Mark Webber was seventh on the grid and did not use the DRS or the supersoft tyres.
Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher who completed 21 laps came fifth and did a fastest of 1 minute and 15.310 seconds. His teammate Nico Rosberg suffered a crash in the opening moments of the session. He crashed his Mercedes exiting the famous tunnel of the Monaco
circuit. Hopefully he will be back in the qualifiers as his car will take some time to rebuild.
Toro Rosso duo of Jamie Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi was eighth and ninth respectively with some handsome times while Sauber’s Sergio Perez completed the top ten drivers.
Apart from Nico, HRT’s Vitantonio Liuzzi crashed his car and his qualifiers’ run is also in jeopardy.
