Fernando Alonso wants more tests and fewer races – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that there should be more tests and fewer grands prix in the sport.
Alonso has shown full support towards the assertion of Ferrari president, Luca di Montezemolo who said that there should be more tests in order to provide all the teams more chances to make developments in their cars during the season.
It will be important to mention that the Italian squad struggled a lot with their car during the pre-season testing programme in 2012. Furthermore, their technical director, Pat Fry ruled out the possibility of a podium finish in the last year’s season opener.
However, the Spaniard performed impressively well throughout the preceding season and tremendously limited the damage for his team. On the other hand, his teammate, Felipe Massa faced a lot of difficulties during the first few races and failed to attain
competitive results for his team.
Nevertheless, Massa came up really strong after the Mugello test as Ferrari successfully made some incredible developments in their car. Moreover, Alonso fought exceptionally well right until the end of the last season, but unfortunately he lost the championship
by just 3 points to Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing who performed incredibly well during the last few races with the fastest car.
Therefore, the two-time world champion has emphasised that there should be more in-season tests in the upcoming seasons so that all the teams get fair chances to improve their car to compete well with their rivals.
“Last year we had the last Grand Prix at the end of November and almost right up to Christmas, there were events I had to take part in,” Alonso said. “There's almost only the end of year holiday when one can have a break and I'll try to fit in a few more
days between now and Melbourne to recharge my batteries.”
“Twenty races is a lot and it's not easy to maintain a maximum performance level, both physical and mental, for the whole year. Maybe it would be better to have one or two fewer races and a few more test sessions,” he added.
