Fernando Alonso will be gunning for his third win of the season at the British GP – Formula 1
Fernando Alonso is now leading the Drivers’ standings but can he sustain that position for long in a highly unpredictable season.
Ferrari were ruled as below par after the first race of the season, because of the troubles the team had with the car. No one told Alonso that and the Spaniard went on to win the second race of the season in Malaysia.
It was a win of pure skill and talent, as Alonso drove under gloom and rainy skies. The win gave the team hope and the motivation to put in more hard work to make the car match up the leaders of the grid.
The next few races did not go so well for the team as Ferrari still tried to fix the issues with the car. Alonso’s teammate Felipe Massa was already struggling coming into the 2012 season and found more turmoil with the car as was not very balanced and it
made his races even more difficult.
The failure of his teammate put more pressure on Alonso to lift the team enough to keep its bid for the title alive. Alonso did just that by coming up with consistent performances and keeping the campaign alive.
Alonso did so well that he topped the drivers’ standings as Ferrari updated their car with new packages and started to challenge the top teams.
Lewis Hamilton took the lead from Alonso briefly before the European Grand Prix, but Alonso with a bit of luck managed to win the Valencia GP and took the lead back from Hamilton. The Spaniard became the first repeat winner of the season. Now Alonso leads
the table with 20 points from the second position, but is it enough to sustain his position through to the end of the season.
Red Bull’s RB8 is clearly the best and the fastest car on track. Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo confirmed this when he expressed his worries after the Valencia GP and advised the team to come up with something different to counter the speed of the
Red Bull car.
Sebastian Vettel was clearly winning the race at Valencia and at one point of the race led by 20 seconds but his car’s engine failed on him and he had to retire. Ferrari will definitely need to counter this otherwise Alonso in all probability faces losing
his lead.
On the other hand Alonso is a very skilled driver and has done immensely well to bring his team to the point that he has. It will be interesting to see how Alonso fares at the British GP.
If the former champion can conjure another win at the venue he will have secure half of the title bid for the season. How the bid actually fares though remains to be seen, the race is scheduled for July 8, 2012.
