Fernando Alonso willing to ‘gamble’ in case of unpredictable weather at Spa – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has recently admitted that he is willing to gamble during this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix in case of variable and unpredictable weather conditions in order to take the advantage over his rivals Red Bull Racing and McLaren.
“For sure changeable conditions is a gamble sometimes, and for the people behind in the championship if we take a risk and maybe things go wrong we don't lose too much because we are already behind. In the case of Red Bull, in the case of changeable conditions
if you make a wrong decision maybe the price is higher,” he said.
The teams went through an extremely difficult Friday practice day at the Spa-Francorchamps after which the teams are concerned about the amount of intermediate tyres they have been provided for the weekend since it is believed that it might rain throughout
the whole race weekend.
“There are some occasions where you feel good with the car and you feel competitive in dry conditions and you expect a dry weekend with minimum changes possible because you know that if everything is consistent you will be quick and fight for victory,” Alonso
said.
Nevertheless, one has to admit that Ferrari are looking extremely strong since the past couple of races as a result of which RBR might be worried about the upcoming couple of races as McLaren are also on a pretty neat winning streak.
RBR have a sufficient lead ahead of its rivals but still they need to finish races consistently with good points in order to retain that lead.
Reliability might not be an issue for them since they are the most reliable team on the 2011 grid as they are the only team to finish all of the races with both drivers successful.
However, Alonso still claims that he has a chance at the title but for that, he would have to take a lot of chances and risks. Same is the case with McLaren because they have nothing to lose and they must perform at their best each weekend in order to defeat
RBR this year.
