Fernando Alonso wins a frenetic Korean Grand Prix and leads the championship table
Fernando Alonso of Ferrari raced into the championship lead after a frenetic Korean Grand Prix win, Red Bull duo of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel crashed out making it a perfect weekend for Ferrari.
Lewis Hamilton also got his title bid back on track with a 2nd place finish and moved up to 3rd place in the championship table. Ferrari’s Felipe Massa had a good day out as well and as promised
did give good assistance to his team mate by finishing 3rd. Meanwhile the current world champion Jenson Button had another bad weekend and managed just a 12th place finish which has all but ended his bid to defend the title.
Fernando Alonso spectacularly is on top of the leader board leading Mark Webber by 11 points, and is 21 ahead of his former team mate Lewis Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel had led for most of the race when his team mate crashed out, but an
engine failure forced him out as well and now 25 points adrift of the top.
Fernando Alonso though insisted that even though he is on top of the world but said that, anything can still happen in final 2 races and he is not going to take anything for granted.
"We know with the new points system everything can change in one race - if you don't score, you lose 25 points to your opponents," said the Spaniard.
"Here it was bad luck for Mark and Sebastian. Anything can happen in the next two races. As we repeat many times, being consistent is very important; we cannot forget we need to be on the podium and fighting for the victory in the last
two races."
Lewis Hamilton who was looking to finish ahead of the Red Bull duo on the weekend did manage to do that, but well not exactly how he would have imagined but still did get the job done. He said that it was a good result for him and he is
pleased to have made it to the 2nd place, and added that with 2 more races left he believes he can really keep his hopes up and battle Alonso hard for the title. Hamilton said that in the final stages of the race his tyres actually
were not feeling that great, and he had to work hard just to finish the race. The Brit said that had he pushed harder, he may have ended slamming into a wall.
The weather in Korea was not good and constant rain meant that the race had to be started behind the safety car. Just after 3 laps the weather got worse and the race was suspended as the cars made their way back to the pits.
There was a wait of 45 minutes and the race was restarted but still under the safety car. It was not before the 17th lap that the safety car actually pulled in and the race actually began.
As soon as the safety car came off it was inevitable that the wet track would result in serious drama. Mark Webber was coming out of turn 12, and went a bit wide which meant he was unable to retain control of the car and skidded all the
way to the concrete wall and on the rebound collided with Nico Rosberg. That ended that race for both of them; Red Bull pit was in a state of shock as their championship leader was knocked out of the race. It was all up to Sebastian Vettel now.
Mark Webber refused to blame the water on the track and after the race admitted that it was his own fault. Webber added that he thought that he could make the turn by going wide but did not anticipate the slippery edges.
The safety cars once again made their way out, it was Vettel leading the race behind him was Alonso ,Hamilton in 3rd and Felipe Massa in 4th.
As the race went on Sebastian Vettel looked to be getting quicker and quicker, and was making great use of the long straights. However when luck is not with you it’s just now your day. Red Bull’s nightmare race continued as with 11 laps
to go the engine of Sebastian Vettel’s car gave way and there was smoke and debris all over.
Fernando Alonso wasted no time and took the lead, and it was then Fernando Alonso leading the race with Lewis Hamilton in 2ndand Felipe Massa in 3rd. considering the incident filled race, no one was still sure if
they were going to end the race in the same order.
However the engine blow up of Vettel proved to be the final incident of the day, and Fernando Alonso completed his 3rd win in 5 races and raced to the top of the table.
There are 2 races left and if Fernando Alonso manages to finish in top 2 in one of them and in top 3 in the other he should be able to win his first world championship with Ferrari and his 3rd individual title.
