Fernando Torres bidding to be fit for Liverpool derby
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres is in a race against time to be fit for the derby against Everton on Sunday 18 October.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup winner was ruled out of international duty with Spain for UEFA 2012 European Football Championship qualifying matches when he tore an adductor muscle in the 2-1 English Premier
League defeat to Liverpool on 3 October.
However, he has resumed training following a course of treatment and has a chance of featuring against the Toffees.
The club’s head of sports medicine and sports science, Dr Peter Brukner, told reporters that he would make the decision alongside manager Roy Hodgson to determine the level of the 26-year-old’s involvement
in the match.
'Optimistic' Torres will play against Everton
He said that: "Fernando has had intense treatment over the last 10 days and responded very well to that treatment. He's ready to resume training today and if we can build up his training and get through
the next few days, then we are optimistic but not certain that he will be able to line up against Everton.
"It's still early days but so far so good. He has responded well to the treatment but we will just have to wait and see whether he is able to build up his training sufficiently. So we are optimistic he
will be ready but it's still too early to say for sure."
While Torres has been struggling for form — he has only scored once this season — his presence will be a boost for the Reds as they search for just their second league victory of the season and attempt
to drag themselves out of the relegation zone. They are currently in 18th place, one behind their next opponents and fierce rivals, after claiming just six points from their first seven fixtures.
