Fernando Torres’ departure blessing in disguise: Ian Rush
Liverpool legend Ian Rush believes that the club is better off without http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707.
The World Cup winning striker left Anfield to join Chelsea on the final day of the January 2011 transfer window.
The Reds have already adjusted to life without their star striker, bringing in Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll for a combined fee of more than 57 million pounds.
Rush, who is still Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorer, believes that the new arrivals at the club are more than capable of filling the void left by Torres’ departure. In fact, the legendary striker claims that Liverpool are now
an even more formidable squad than they were with Torres up front.
Speaking on the Spaniard’s high-profile transfer to Premier League rivals http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786, Rush was of the opinion that it was best to let go of someone who hands in his transfer request.
He added, “The way (Liverpool manager) Kenny Dalglish handled the situation was absolutely fantastic - he got two brilliant players (Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll) in to replace Torres and we'll (http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809) be a better team for it.”
The Liverpool legend went on to express his disappointment at the way Torres left Anfield. Rush believes that the Spaniard betrayed the Reds supporters with his move to archrivals Chelsea.
He said, “I think the supporters felt let down by him. They absolutely loved Fernando Torres and gave him everything they could in terms of their support. He was idolised by the Kop and I think they thought he would repay their support by staying with the
Club for a long, long time but he had other ideas.”
Rush can afford to be so optimistic. Liverpool are currently on a run of six unbeaten games in the Premier League, catapulting them into sixth place in the League table. If the Reds continue like this, they might just find themselves inside the top four
before all is said and done.
