Fernando Torres desperate for Liverpool to find new owners
Liverpool star striker, Fernando Torres, revealed today he is desperate for the club to find new owners in order to provide stability to the English Premier League outfit.
The club’s co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett put the club on the market in April. Several parties have made bids and have entered into discussions regarding a potential purchase, but the American duo have yet to find a buyer. If the club does not pay the £237m owed to their largest creditor ,The Royal Bank of Scotland, by October 6, the result will be a penalty fee of £60m.
The uncertainty has transferred onto the pitch, where Liverpool has endured a dismal season after finishing seventh in the league and failing to pick up any silverware.
Torres is hoping to avoid any any situation where Liverpool would have to pay a heavy penalty, and for a prompt takeover that will give Liverpool a steady foundation from which they can build to make a bid for the EPL title.
He told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope that, "It is fundamental new owners arrive that can make us a competitive side. We're not that far behind. We had an appalling season last time around, but the year before we were just four points from Manchester United. Hopefully, we can find a consortium that buys the club and can make Liverpool able to fight financially with Chelsea and United.”
Torres, who won the 2010 FIFA World Cup with Spain this summer, also revealed that there had been several inquiries made by other clubs regarding his services. He said that, "The club received offers and decided to reject them. That's where it ends. Everyone thought I was leaving for Spain during the World Cup when there was nothing in it. I said the day I returned to train that my future was at Liverpool. I have a contract until 2013.”
