Fernando Torres injury not that serious say Liverpool
Fernando Torres came into the world cup after recovering from an injury. Torres did not feature in the final month or so of Premier league season due to a hamstring injury.
At the start of world cup Torres did get himself in the starting line up alongside David Villa but was not able to make much of an impression. Torres looked severely short on match fitness and eventually Spanish manager Del Bosque had to send him to the bench. The Spanish striker made substitute appearances in the last 3 matches and still was not able to make his presence felt. But in the final Torres was the one to initiate the move that led to Iniesta’s goal.
Soon after the goal Torres in an effort to chase down a long ball pulled up and went to ground, it was later revealed that he had suffered a Groin injury. His club Liverpool though remains confident that their ace Marksman will be fit in time for start of the season in mid August.
Liverpool said that his injury is not as serious as first feared. Liverpool team doctor Peter Brukner said that Spain’s medical team did not think that it was too serious. They are waiting for some results from a scan and only after the final results will the extent of the injury be determined.
On the other hand there is some good news for Liverpool as far as injuries are concerned, their signing from last season midfielder Alberto Aquilani, who came to Liverpool carrying a foot injury has finally recovered and will be ready at the start of the season. The 25 year old made his move to Liverpool from AS Roma for 20 million pounds in August last year. He was not able to be a part of the squad for most of the season due to the injury and played only a handful of games at the tail end of the season. Liverpool’s new doctor Brukner who is also the chief of sports sciences and sports medicine confirmed that Aquilani’s ankle has healed to full extent, and he has been looking good in training.
Fernando Torres did not have an injury free season at Liverpool in 2009-10, he played only 32 matches the whole season, but still was the highest goal scorer with 22 goals. Torres was continuously bothered by a groin problem in December and had to get surgery done on the right knee that kept him out for January and February. The same right knee of the Spaniard was once again operated on in March. The 2nd operation meant he would not take part in the final 4 matches of Liverpool’s season. He was also not part of their team when they played, Atletico Madrid (Torres’ former team) in the UEFA Europa League, and lost.
After being out for 6 weeks Torres made his way back to play for Spain in the World Cup in South Africa. He failed to score a single goal in the entire tournament. He only made a substitute appearance in extra time during the final. The Spanish Marksman has long been the topic of debate regarding his move from Anfield; Liverpool finished outside the top 4 in the league last season and will not be taking part in the Champion’s League in the upcoming season. Playing in Europe is a priority for any top player and it was widely believed that lack of trophies at Anfield may force him out of there. However, till now he has said that he will remain at Liverpool. Many big clubs such as Barcelona, Chelsea and Real Madrid have been looking to sign him.
