Fernando Torres insists his best is yet to come
It were two moments of magic by Liverpool’s talismanic striker, Fernando Torres that helped his side beat the league champions Chelsea at Anfield last night. Torres struck either side of the half to give his side a much needed victory that now sees Liverpool
climb into the top half of the table with only goal difference keeping them out of the European slots.
Torres’ two strikes were two high calibre finishes and indicative of the fact that the striker is re-emerging from one of the darkest spells in his career and finding his magical touch in front of goal.
But, the striker feels that he is still a fair bit away from playing his best and says that it will take time.
Torres has been the centre of attention in recent weeks and under heavy scrutiny after his side had failed to beat some easier oppositions but the Spaniard found the perfect way to silence his critics with a brace against the best defence in the league and
that too with two magical finishes.
Both the finishes were not easy as he masterfully controlled Dirk Kuyt’s lobbed pass to run clear from John Terry to slot home past Petr Cech from an acute angle.
His second came from an even more acute angle and was a thing of beauty as he received the ball on the edge of the box and after making his way into the box, he used the defenders as a shield to blind the goalie and then magically curled the ball into the
far right corner of the goal.
The way the Spaniard played last night only suggests that he has found his magical touch but the striker insists that he still has not hit the top gear.
"It has been a very difficult time but I'm improving. I don't know if I can play my best soon but I will as soon as possible," the Liverpool striker was quoted as saying.
Liverpool’s win was built on the shoulders of two indefatigable performances by two unsung heroes, Dirk Kuyt and Lucas Leiva, who ran the show in the middle of the park and gave Chelsea no space and time on ball but Torres grabbed all the headlines with
a brace of the highest quality and perhaps deservedly so.
Torres feels that after a barren run in front of the goal in recent time it was good for him to have found his scoring touch against the champions and it will go a long way in helping him rediscover his form.
"It was a tough end to [last] season for me, difficult in the World Cup, I had a lot of injuries, it was difficult training every day. Every game I am feeling better, improving every day. It's part of a footballer's life being criticized. Playing for a team
like Liverpool, everyone is watching everything you are doing around the world a minute later. I know the expectations, I am ready to fight and get my form."
Liverpool are now 9th in the league table, level on points with four other teams and with three back to back wins, their rise is clear for all and sundry to see.
Liverpool went into the match on the back of a remarkable comeback against Napoli in the Europa League where they came back from a goal down to win the match 3-1 with 'Captain Commendable' getting a hat trick.
The win also eases pressure on the manager who had been under immense pressure as Liverpool were stuck in the relegation zone after 6 games played in the season.
It was the best result for Hodgson since taking over the club and after a dull result at Blackburn in front of the new owners, the renewed vigour and faith will have surely impressed the owners.
