Fernando Torres promises to get back to his best
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has vowed to return to his best form, once he is back to full fitness. Torres has struggled with various injuries for the best part of a year now, robbing Liverpool fans of their most valuable asset. His importance to the side was underlined last season, as the Reds finished seventh in the table, off the back of their second place finish the year before. There were various reasons for the side’s rapid decline but Torres’s lack of playing time last term was certainly a major factor.
His injury was undoubtedly carried into the World Cup too, where he not only failed to score, but looked a shadow of the player that fans of the Premier League have grown so accustomed to since his arrival on Merseyside in 2007. But now, after a week in which he netted the winner against West Brom, followed by a brace for Spain against minnows Liechtenstein, he claims his sharpness is beginning to return. The Spanish striker insisted: “I am still not 100 per cent, but the people will soon see the best Torres.”
Liverpool fans will certainly hope that is the case, especially following the lack of another senior striker on the club’s books. Many expected manager Roy Hodgson to bring another forward during the summer transfer window, but nothing transpired, leaving Torres, and 21-year-old Frenchman David N’Gog, the only options available to Hogdson.
Despite N’Gog’s impressive start to the season, he simply cannot fill Torres’ boots if the Spaniard has another injury-plagued campaign. A fit and firing Torres is pivotal to any Liverpool success this season, so Reds fans will no doubt be crossing their fingers every time he takes to the field. If he can stay fit and regain the kind of form he showed in his first two seasons with the club, Liverpool have every chance of reclaiming their spot in the top four.
