Fernando Torres scores as Chelsea look set under Andre Villas-Boas for the upcoming season
Former Liverpool striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 scored for Chelsea in their pre-season friendly against Wycombe Wanderers, in the Blues’ 3-0 win over the League One side. The fact that the 27-year-old forward found the back of the net came as a huge relief for the Blues, even though this is just the pre-season.
Chelsea signed the Spaniard from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 in the January transfer window of last season for a record breaking fee of £50 million. Unfortunately for the Blues, Torres failed to perform, scoring just one goal since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
Torres made a http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044 by then manager Carlo Ancelotti, but none of that helped his flailing form.
However, the Italian boss was sacked at the end of last season as Chelsea finished without any silverware. Former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 boss Andre Villas-Boas takes over the managers’ position and the clash against Wycombe was his first competitive match in charge of the London side.
The Portuguese manager seemed to have done an amazing http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Yossi-Benayoun-c37520 opened the scoring for Chelsea, with an exquisite back heel volley.
Fernando Torres doubled the scoring in the second half, with his first touch on the ball ending up in the back of the net. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Slobodan-Rajkovic-c33708, whose shot gave the Blues a comfortable 3-0 win.
Rajkovic signed with Chelsea in 2007, but has since been on loan to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Chelsea seemed like an entirely different side as compared to the squad that finished the season under Ancelotti. The motivation, if carried forward to the new English Premier League season, could be the difference between the Blues and their competition.
As Chelsea aim to return to winning ways, eyeing the English Premier League crown and the Champions League, they will need more of these performances. The performance and win was more impressive considering the fact that the Blues have not yet made any signings in the transfer window.
Chelsea are amongst the few sides in the Premier League who have been very quite in the transfer market, despite being linked to a host of top players. Villas-Boas is currently focusing on sharpening up the existing players before he decides to bring in new signings.
The Blues definitely need new signings, especially after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Essien-c25294 sustained a knee injury that will keep him out for six months. As talented as Chelsea’s midfield is, they need reinforcements before the beginning of the 2011-2012 season.
Apart from that, Villas-Boas’ main task as Chelsea manager will be to build a squad that supports Torres and helps him return to his goal-scoring ways. While the players managed perfectly against Wycombe in the friendly, the upcoming season promises to be much tougher.
This is one of the reasons why the Blues are not prepared to give up on Tottenham Hotspur midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857. The Croatian midfielder could prove to be the perfect addition to the Blues squad, but at this point seems impossible to get, with the Blues having their bid for him rejected.
