Fernando Verdasco blows away Frederico Gil in the second round – Suisse Open Gstaad 2011
A comprehensive victory for the world number 20, Fernando Verdasco of Spain, as he ousted the 93rd ranked Portuguese competitor, Frederico Gil in the second round of Credit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad on Thursday afternoon.
The contest took place on the clay courts of the Credit Agricole Arena in Gstaad, Switzerland, with the fourth seeded Spaniard winning the contest with the utmost ease to reach the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis
Professionals) World Tour 250 tournament. Verdasco wrapped up his straight sets victory at 6-3, 6-2, taking just one hour and seventeen minutes of play to eject Gil from the competition in the second round.
Sheer Spanish dominance was witnessed throughout the contest, with Verdasco orchestrating most of the rallies to come out as the winner in the end. The fourth seed used his fiery serve to perfection and it proved to be the critical
success factor for him in the matchup. Verdasco’s serve reached 72 per cent precision in the match, with four aces and two double faults conceded, and he collected 28 first serve points en route to victory.
The Spanish serve remained unbroken in the entire contest, with Gil squandering away five break opportunities to let Verdasco fly away with victory. Gils’s bleak baseline defence was breached on a number of occasions, with the
Spaniard nailing assertive winners down the line on regularity.
Verdasco was off to an aggressive start in the opening set and stung an early serve break to lead 3-1. He secured 14, while his opponent clinched 20 first serve points in the opener but the difference was made by the break point
conversions from Verdasco. A second serve break in the eighth game propelled Verdasco to set point and he got one up in the matchup after closing out the first set at 6-3.
Things got even worse for the Portuguese in the following set, as he suffered another serve break in the very first game to trail 0-2. Verdasco secured 14 out of 19 first serve points in the second set and registered two break
point conversion s to seal victory at 6-2, getting into the quarter-final draws of Credit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad.
Verdasco needs to go through Julien Benneteau of France in the next round to get a berth in the semi-finals of the tournament. The Frenchman was successful against Matthias Bachinger of Germany in the second round to book a date
with Verdasco in the round of eight.
