Fernando Verdasco bombshells Jurgen Melzer; moves into the semis – German Tennis Championships 2011
At last, the German Tennis Championship saw the start of some upsets at some awfully upsetting points. The quarter-finals started on Friday the 22nd when Jurgen Melzer took on the Spaniard sensation Fernando Verdasco
in a best of three match for a spot in the semis. The match started off at 11:07 local time. The Rothenbaum Tennis Court had an electrifying audience as fans had their part of the game perfectly covered up by banners and face paints.
Jurgen Melzer has been a rising star in the past few tournaments but every rising has to come back to the ground one way of the other. The 30-year-old turned pro 1999 but failed to reach a better ranking that his highest of world
No.8. However, the Austrian has been more of an unidentified playing object. Playing like he has been captured by the soul of Sampras or losing as if he was Agassi at his end.
On the other hand, the Spaniard has been extravagant with his favourite forehands shots recently. His perfection from the baseline has been knocking out opponents in no time. The 27-year-old plays like a ragging teenager with his
aggression crossing the threshold.
Verdasco has been up against the Austrian world No.12 eight times and has brought tears in the Austrians eyes because of the frustration of losing to a low ranked spotter. Out of the eight, Jurgen has won only two and rest of
the times the Spaniard nailed the Austrian with great pleasure.
The fixture at the Hamburg open quarter-final was their eighth. The match started off with Verdasco opening for the first game and the score card 1-0. Breaking the Austrian in the second game, Verdasco increased hi speed to 2-0
and further on to 3-0 in the 3rd game. Game 4 went to Melzer but that did not help him out at all. The 3 games lead was too much to catch up and ultimately led to Verdasco winning the first set with the same lead 6-3.
Then came the second set with Melzer in “Sampras: form. Giving a harsher beating to the Spaniard on his ground, the Austrian won the set with an astonishing 6-2 score. The set was opened up by Melzer, giving away a breakpoint but
he levelled it up in the next to make it 1-1. Winning the next 3 games the World No. 12 took the scores to 4-1 in game 14. Verdasco managed just one more game before the Austrian levelled up the set score to 1-1 winning the 2nd set 6-2.
Well that was it for Melzer as the Spaniard put an end to the Austrians hopes in the decider. The set started off with Melzer serving first making it 1-0. The Spanish Bull was ready with his horns pointed towards the Austrian only
to throw him off the court and back to Austria. With scores 3-3 Verdasco and Melzer had a breakpoint fight in 3 straight games. Melzer lost two out of the 3 and the final game to lose the set 6-4 and the match with a final score of 6-3, 2-6 and 6-4.
Although Verdasco has been the former world No.7, it is much expected that who stands at a better position deserves to ride the best horse. But this time there was no horse but a Bull that had the winning walk to the locker room.
Verdasco now sits in the semi-finals where he will play compatriot, Nicolas Almagro.
