Fernando Verdasco downs Go Soeda to enter round two – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012
Former world number seven, Fernando Verdasco from Spain, dumped the Japanese starlet, Go Soeda, in straight sets at the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012 on Sunday. He juggled up a 6-2, 6-4 victory against the world number 55 to power into the second round at
this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event held in Shanghai, Rolex.
The Spanish veteran showed superb skills and abilities to overpower Soeda in their first encounter. After recording the victory in one hour and 28 minutes, Verdasco edged in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series by 1-0 against his fellow 28-year-old and progressed
into the second round at this outdoor hard court event.
Verdasco went berserk after entering Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena. He winded up four games in a row before Soeda could come on the score card. The Spaniard then held his remaining serves with poise and clicked the opener with a 6-2 win. He dusted away
both breakpoints he faced and availed two out of three break chances to inch towards the fame.
Currently ranked 23rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Verdasco carried his rhythm in the following set. He got the coveted break in the third game and took a 2-1 lead. Despite losing his edge in the very next game, the Spaniard
broke his rival’s serve once again and jumped to a 4-2 lead. He kept his remaining serves with ease and sealed the set by winning six games to four.
The Madrid native moved a step closer towards his sixth career title after this victory. He smashed six aces and nudged up a better first serve share of 66 per cent as compared to his rival’s 49 per cent. Verdasco also amazingly marked 32 out of 45 points
on it and ended the match with 73 points.
Verdasco will face off seventh seeded Juan Monaco who received a first round bye after being the top eight players at this event.
The Slovakian star, Martin Klizan, also stole the show later that day. He dumped the Brazilian star, Thomaz Bellucci, in straight sets in one hour and 27 minutes.
