Fernando Verdasco stomps over Stanislas Wawrinka to reach title-round – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Former world number seven, Fernando Verdasco, blasted past the Swiss contender, Stanislas Wawrinka, in straight sets at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 series event taking place in Acapulco, Mexico.
He penned down a 6-3, 6-3 score line against the world number 29 to advance into the final showdown on Friday.
The eighth seed required almost one and half hour to dump Wawrinka in his third meeting. After pocketing this match, Verdasco not only avenged his loss at the Gstaad ATP event seven years ago but also took lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 2-1
against the Swiss.
"This has been an amazing week, I am very happy with my results up to now," said the high spirited Spaniard after the match. "There is no doubt that tomorrow I will give my everything to win both singles and doubles. But win or lose, this week has been a
great result for me.”
Currently standing at number 27 in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Verdasco assertively entered the Fairmont Acapulco Princess and held his opening serve in the second game to level the scores at 1-1. He remained firm throughout the set
and after Wawrinka held his serve in the fifth game, the Spaniard went into rage mode. He wiped out the last four games in a row and eventually bagged the opener with a 6-3 win.
The Spanish veteran carried his winning ways into the following set and slid his opening serve in the first game. He maintained his intensity and not only swiped in remaining serves but also got the breakthrough in the sixth game, ultimately clinching the
set with a 6-3 score line.
Verdasco will square off against his top seeded compatriot, David Ferrer, who dumped Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo to secure this spot. The 28-year-old leads the head-to-head series by 7-6 against Ferrer but lost in their most recent encounter in Auckland
earlier this season.
"Tomorrow again Fernando, I of course expect a difficult match," the world number six said about his looming match-up. "We know each other really well, and in a final, both players want to give everything out there and win the title."
The Spanish number two, Ferrer, brushed off all six breakpoints she came across and capitalised on two out of seven break chances to seal the deal with a 7-5, 6-4 success.
