Fernando Verdasco triumphs over Albert Ramos in round two – US Open 2012
In an-all Spanish affair, 25th seed Fernando Verdasco battled past his compatriot, Albert Ramos, in a four-set mouth-watering battle at the US Open 2012 on Thursday. He jolted down a 7-6(4), 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-4 victory against the 24-year-old to
advance into the third round at this major hard court event held in Queens in New York City, United States.
The former Top 10 re-ignited his spark to outmuscle his fellow citizen in their second encounter. After earning the success, Verdasco not only avenged his loss at the Brasil Open in Sao Paulo earlier this circuit and levelled the FedEx ATP (Association of
Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series by 1-1 against his compatriot.
Verdasco made a sloppy entry at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He suffered the first blow in the second game and fell at 0-2. However, he quickly counterattacked and snatched his break back in the very next game. The seed held his remaining
serves with conviction and not only took the set to a tie-breaker but dominated din it to carve out the opener with a 7-6(4) success.
The world number 50 rebounded in the follow-up set. He got the critical break in the opening game to take the initial lead. Regardless of losing his serve in the very next game, Ramos capitalised on another break chance in the 11th game and clinched
the set with a 7-5 score line.
The 28-year-old Spaniard got back in action in the third set. He hammered two aces and smoothly swiped his entire serves with self-assurance. Verdasco failed to get a breakthrough but prevailed in the tie-breaker to pocket the set with a 7-6(5) win.
Currently ranked 26th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Verdasco got the desiderated break in the opening game of the proceeding set. He squandered his edge in the fourth game but broke his compatriot’s serve again in the very
next game. The higher ranked Spaniard held his remaining serves and eventually clicked the set by winning six games to four.
Next challenge for Verdasco is the top seed, Roger Federer, who eased past Germany’s Bjorn Phau in straight sets to set up this match.
