Ferrari back to the podium in Turkish Grand Prix – Formula 1 update
Formula 1 Ferrari driver, Fernando Alonso, has put his team back on the podium in the Turkish Grand Prix, after a tough start in the 2011 season. Alonso finished his third fastest run of the race, behind Red Bull’s Mark Webber.
The team had a disappointing start in the first three races of the season, held in Australia, Malaysia and China, respectively. However, the two-time world champion made an impressive run for his team at the Istanbul Park circuit on Sunday, May 8.
The Spanish driver had a tough battle with Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg and Webber, in the last laps of the race. The 29-year-old driver was busy, fighting to beat Webber in the last moments of the course, but the German re-took his podium position in the closing
stages of the chase.
After the race, Alonso was quite happy with his race performance. He said that the team had a good weekend and added, “The car performed a bit better than what we did in the first three races of the championship, so finally we enjoyed racing again and we
enjoyed a race fighting for the podium positions, changing position through the race. Finally we can enjoy racing again.”
He also discussed his early delay behind Rosberg and said, “We lost a little bit of time behind Rosberg at the beginning, and we did not feel the possibility to fight for P1 anymore, so we concentrated on P2. I had a little bit of advantage in terms of tyre
degradation compared to Mark, we used the DRS and I was able to overtake him.”
He further added that the Turkish race was ‘okay’ for the squad, as they tried to fight with the strong Red Bull team.
Alonso’s team-mate, Felipe Massa, failed to score a single point for Ferrari as his car had some technical issues during the race. The Brazilian driver finished his run at the eleventh place.
Current world champion, Sebastian Vettel is enjoying his great run of form after winning his third race of the season in Turkey.
Paul Di Resta of Force India-Mercedes and Timo Glock of Virgin-Cosworth, were unable to classify on the Turkish race results sheet. Both drivers retired from the race, due to some issues in their cars.
After his third podium place in the Turkish race, Alonso is looking forward to another pole place in the up-coming race of the season, which is to be held in Spain, in the last days of May.
