Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali: Vettel needs to be stopped before it is too late – Formula 1 news
Ferrari Formula 1 team Principal Stefano Domenicali fears that if the defending champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull is not stopped from taking another victory, the drivers’ championship will be over soon.
Domenicali added that the Ferrari team and technical staff want to push hard in the development ground so that the championship window is open for them to squeeze in.
So far, Ferrari are way back in terms of points and in terms of development from the Red Bull team for which Stefano thinks that the champions need to be stopped before its too late.
“If Red Bull keep progressing like they have, then no doubt it [the championship] will not be easy. They are very far ahead, so we need to make sure we do the maximum to recover,” commented Stefano.
He further added that people in the Maranello-based outfit are working hard but Red Bull need to be pressurised.
From the last race in Spain, where Fernando Alonso went from race leader to being lapped by the opening four cars, it became clear that Ferrari are struggling to get a consistency out of their 2011 cars.
Apart from Alonso, Felipe Massa was not even able to see the chequered flag as he failed to get any grip on the hard Pirelli tyres and pulled out of the race just in the final moments.
“Sunday was the worst race we have had since the beginning of the season in terms of race pace because before that we were quick, so it's a shame,” commented Stefano on the Spanish race.
Pirelli are expected to bring super-soft compound for the Monaco Grand Prix which will again be alien to the Formula 1 teams. All Ferrari can expect is that they set well with their car.
Stefano also said that the new Pirelli tyres will again change the course of development for them which he hoped goes in the right direction.
The sixth grand prix of the season kicks off with the free practice sessions on Thursday while the race is scheduled for May 29, 2011.
