Ferrari changes team structure after the Abu Dhabi blunder
Ferrari announced the ex-McLaren designer, Pat Fry to be the head of the team’s engineering unit, a place occupied by Chris Dyer previously.
Before entering into the 2011 Formula One season, the team has decided to make some crucial changes in its structure. Although the Italian squad announced several times last year that it is satisfied by the current combination of its employees, yet the distressing
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix forced the management to take some serious measures before the beginning of the next season.
The Ferrari driver, Fernando Alonso entered the last race of the season, being at the top of the points’ tally, and his victory seemed quite possible. However, a poor race strategy, which asked the driver to take an early pit stop, cost him the third championship
of his career. There have been some reports earlier this week that after the loss of the title, the Ferrari team principal, Stefano Domenicali considered retiring from his post. However, the Italian explained this Tuesday that had he been a football coach,
he would have announced retirement but Formula One is a complex sport.
Still, the team believed that some modifications in the team are necessary to avoid a similar blunder in the future. After a very thorough consideration, the team management came to the conclusion that Dyer is the person to blame for making the call to bring
Alonso in the pits that early.
Last week, Domenicali told some reporters, "The mistake had a devastating effect. But in a normal race it was a normal error. So you can't jettison everything - even the good things - because of it. We will officially announce something in the coming hours
and make sure that those who are making decisions in the crucial moments have all the tools to not repeat the mistakes."
However, this Tuesday Ferrari confirmed Dyer's farewell from his post as Fry will take over the role now. He further added that so far the new responsibility for the former has not been decided but soon he will come up with the other announcement also.
Along with the added role of ‘Head of Race Track Engineering’, Fry will continue his current role, until the team comes up with some more changes in the structure. Moreover, the team also confirmed that Dyer is not going to leave the team and he will be
given some other important role, but not something as critical as his previous role.
Dyer joined Ferrari in 2001 and has had a continuous growing graph with the Italian squad, till last evening. He was the mastermind behind some of Michael Schumacher's victories in the early 2000s and Kimi Raikkonen's title win in 2007.
