Ferrari clarify Luca di Montezemolo’s comments, say they are still committed to F1 – Formula 1 news
Ferrari have explained its president Luca di Montezemolo’s recent comments and have shown their commitment towards Formula 1.
Montezemolo expressed his issues on the official Ferrari website on the current format and rules of the sport and stated that the lack of testing and the dependency on aerodynamics for performance has put Ferrari in a difficult position in terms of output.
“We will support our views as we see fit, in the best way possible, but let's be clear, for those who agree, that is fine, but otherwise they will just have to accept it is our position. If Formula One still wants Ferrari it must change and go back to being
at the cutting edge of research, while always keeping an eye on costs,” he added.
The comments were widely interpreted as a warning from Ferrari to exit the sport if the rules were not amended.
Ferrari though has been quick to respond to the recent developments and explained that Montezemolo’s comments were interpreted wrongly. They clarified what he really meant.
On the Ferrari website through the Horse Whisperer column, they clarified the comments and said, “Montezemolo's observations were seen by some as a sort of ultimatum or even a threat to leave Formula One, but the Whisperer can assure you that it was nothing
of the kind,” the anonymous column read.
The column further explained that Formula 1 is still very much the life of Ferrari just like Formula 1 would not be the same without Ferrari. The comments and criticisms put forth are nothing new and have been voiced before. It is logical for a car manufacturer
to see its involvement in Formula 1 as a test ground to advanced technological research foremost and then also keeping in mind the cost control aspect.
Those reasons are logical and are the basis on which number of testing days needs to be revised. It will help training youngsters to progress and gain experience from driving for real instead of going through virtual simulators.
The aerodynamics limitations are also counter-productive in terms of competition. Ferrari has always been historically at the forefront of competitiveness through innovation and that is something they hope to gain from the future of the sport.
