Ferrari consider yellow flag issue closed after FIA’s reply – Formula 1 news
Ferrari have stated that they consider the yellow flag issue, which was raised after the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix, closed after the FIA’s clarification on the matter.
The Scarlet team thought that Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing illegally overtook Toro Rosso driver, Jean-Eric Vergne during the yellow flag as the warning lights were blinking in his cockpit.
Therefore, Ferrari wrote an unofficial letter to FIA in which they asked for the necessary explanation regarding Vettel’s pass in the season finale.
Contrarily, FIA have declared the veteran German driver’s pass completely legal and have dismissed the ongoing speculations.
Afterwards, Ferrari expressed that they asked for clarification from FIA only because they got a lot of emails from their fans who were asking them to provide the needed elucidation. Nevertheless, they regard the matter as closed now after getting FIA’s
response.
“The request for a clarification from the FIA, regarding Vettel's passing move on Vergne, came about through the need to shed light on the circumstances of the move, which came out on the Internet only a few days after the race,” read a Ferrari statement.
“The letter to the FIA was in no way intended to undermine the legality of the race result. We received tens of thousands of queries relating to this matter from all over the world. Ferrari duly takes note of the reply sent by the FIA this morning and therefore
considers the matter now closed.”
It is to be noted that if the overtake had been considered illegal, the 25-year-old would have faced a post-race penalty of 20-second as a result of which he could have lost his championship title. However, nothing happened against him and he successfully
managed to win his third consecutive championship title.
There were many who didn’t pay much attention to the issue. For instance, Formula 1 CEO, Bernie Ecclestone called the yellow flag argument a joke and spoke in favour of the three-time world champion.
Meanwhile, Vettel’s teammate, Mark Webber also asserted that they were not feeling any kind of pressure as the race had already been won and the decision was unlikely to be reversed.
