Ferrari defines Neil Martin’s new role
Ferrari revealed the responsibilities of the much hyped new recruit of the team Neil Martin, saying that he will not travel with the team to Grand Prix's in 2011. Rather their team of engineers will stay at Maranello, and facilitate the drivers and their engineers from within the main office.
Ferrari has designated Martin to head the remote operations unit, and will be leading a team of a dozen engineers who gather data and analyse it for better team decisions. The team talked to the reporters earlier today at the Madonna di Campiglio ski resort as it celebrated the Marlboro's annual 'Wrooom' media event. The high profile, extravagant occasion was staged together with Ducati, welcoming all the key members of the team.
Around 200 people of specialist media came together in the Italian Dolomites to redefine the role of most of the leading figures of the Italian team. Although the team has not made a lot of changes in the team structure but the few done are all very significant ones.
The most critical of all the changes for the upcoming season is the inclusion of Martin in the Italian squad, who will be heading the team's new operations research department. The 38-year-old Briton, until last month, served as the chief strategist at Red Bull, and is thought to be one of the major players behind the success of the Austrian squad. Following Martin’s announcement of departure from the team, the Red Bull owner, Dietrich Mateschitz said that the Italian team has tried pulling many important people from his team; however all except one are still under the Red Bull umbrella.
On the other hand, Ferrari announced last week that it did not intend to make any changes in its structure, but the poor race strategy at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix forced the team to take some measures for the 2011 season. Chris Dyer, who was the head of Race Track Engineering Unit until last week, has been removed from his post. He was held responsible for tailoring the poor strategy, calling Fernando Alonso to the pits during the early laps, costing the driver his third world title. Although, the Italian team has not defined the new role of the Australian so far, yet it was announced that it would be declared soon.
