Ferrari driver Felipe Massa claims the 2011 Belgian Grand Prix was strange – Formula 1 news
Ferrari’s Felipe Massa has recently stated that the Belgian Grand Prix was a strange race maybe because of the varying conditions or maybe because of the unexpected race strategies that the teams had to adopt.
“In the opening phase I was absolutely in the fight for the top places, but then I started to have tyre problems and the car seemed to no longer be so well balanced. With the Mediums, the situation improved, maybe also down to an adjustment to the front
wing which we made at the pit stop, but we were not quick enough, as was clearly evident and by then it was too late,” he said.
Ferrari and McLaren had an extremely disappointing weekend as Fernando Alonso finished in 4th place while Massa himself finished in a disappointing 8th place. Lewis Hamilton on the other hand crashed out
of the race as a result of which Red Bull Racing secured a 1-2 and now the championship is in their hands quite comfortably.
Vettel’s closest rival is Mark Webber and it seems that out of the 5 championship competitors, he is the only one who might have a shot at the title.
However, Massa admitted that he struggled a lot to perform as the car was not up to the mark overall as a result of which the team will have to make some major improvements before the upcoming Italian Grand Prix which is their home race.
“Furthermore, I was struggling especially in the slowest corners - the final chicane and La Source - and that stopped me from getting as good a tow as possible,” said Massa.
Either way, Ferrari are pretty much out of the constructors’ championship and now, Alonso’s chances of taking on Sebastian Vettel for the drivers’ title are extremely low as well. He needs to pull off a miracle and expect Vettel to make big mistakes in the
remaining 7 races of the 2011 Formula 1 season which is pretty much impossible keeping in mind RBR are the most reliable team on the grid at the moment.
