Ferrari driver Felipe Massa fails to understand drive-through penalty at Indian GP – Formula 1 news
The inaugural Indian Grand Prix that took place at the Buddh International Circuit this Sunday, October 30, 2011 witnessed Felipe Massa of Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren-Mercedes caught in another collision which resulted in a retirement halfway down
the race for Massa along with a drive-through penalty.
The Brazilian is still clueless as to why the stewards imposed on him the drive-through penalty when he clearly was not the one to be blamed. He is confident that the accident that occurred between him and Hamilton of McLaren-Mercedes was not his fault.
“My view is that I was in front, I braked later than him and I was in front, I was on the grippy area as well and then I started to turn and I didn't see him on the left as he was behind,” said Massa. “He touched my rear wheel. So, to be honest I don't understand
why I have the penalty. It is not really understandable.”
This is the sixth time in the season that the two drivers have had an accident, hence it becomes more important than ever to look into the reasons and find out a possible solution to his non-ending series of conflicts with Hamilton.
Massa has openly denied all accusations that he had no personal grudge against his competitor from McLaren.
Massa added, “I turned because I braked later than him. I cannot understand why I am supposed to back off and let him by, no? I braked later. He was on the dirty side.”
The accident occurred at turn 5 of lap 24 when Hamilton tried to overtake Massa in a futile attempt that caused severe damage to the front rear wing of the Briton’s car. Massa was imposed with a drive through penalty by the race-stewards who held him responsible
for the collision.
The two drivers who had lost their race pace and momentum after the collision found it hard to recover and Massa retired from the race by lap 35.
Hamilton who was the runner-up at the recently held Korean Grand Prix at the Yeongam circuit, failed to impress his fans this time around.
Hamilton finished the race at the seventh place after starting off 6th on the grid.
Let’s see what turn does this dispute take in the days to come.
