Ferrari driver Felipe Massa not giving up on 2011 season – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Felipe Massa has said that there are plenty of reasons why his team should not give up on its 2011 car as there are still 11 races left in the season.
Massa added they can still catch up on the championship leaders Red Bull Racing Team.
“There has been a lot of discussion about whether Ferrari's Championship chances are already over this early in the season. I don't know the answer to that, but will still tackle every race in the same way, trying to win it,” he said.
According to the team however, Ferrari might shift its focus to its 2012 car if they fail to produce some results at the next couple of races of the season. That would be the best decision for the team since they are currently 166 points short of Red Bull
Racing Team in the constructors’ standings and only a miracle can reduce the gap in just 11 races.
Felipe Massa on the other hand is currently 144 points behind Sebastian Vettel in the drivers’ standings while his teammate Fernando Alonso is currently 99 points adrift of the current championship leader.
Alonso has been performing much better than his teammate so far in the 2011 Formula 1 season and it seems that the Brazilian might not be a part of the team next season. Massa has failed to perform up to the mark since his return to the sport back in 2010.
Alonso challenged for the drivers’ title until the grand finale of the 2010 season while Massa finished in a disappointing 6th place in the standings.
“Realistically, Sebastian Vettel would need to do a really crazy job to lose the title. But we cannot give up and this situation changes nothing in our approach, because a victory is already a very nice thing to have and some wins this year would show we
have done a good job,” said Massa.
Even the Spaniard is not quite optimistic about the 2011 run but it seems that Massa still believes that the team has the capability to catch Red Bull and their immediate task is to secure a race win this season. Let’s see if they can manage that at the
upcoming Silverstone Grand Prix.
