Ferrari driver Felipe Massa says Hungarian Grand Prix important for him – Formula 1 news
Felipe Massa went through a near fatal accident during the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix after which he was unable to compete for the remainder of the 2009 Formula 1 season as a result of which, the Hungaroring holds a special place in the Brazilian’s heart.
“Clearly, after what happened two years ago, Budapest and the Hungarian people are an important part of my personal history and once again I plan to meet the people who helped me through that difficult time, both at the track and the hospital,” Massa said.
It was one of the most tragic moments of the sport as the Brazilian driver went into a coma after this incident and since then, his driving skills have been affected immensely as well.
He did not compete for the rest of the 2009 Formula 1 season and went through an extremely tough time in the hospitals with daily checkups and psychologically, it was a massive blow for him.
Massa was hit in the head with a heavy spring which flew from one of the cars ahead of him. The Ferrari driver immediately went unconscious as a result of which he crashed into the tyre wall right in front of him at around 200 miles per hour.
“Since the accident, I have a lot of fans there: I don't think they became my fans because of the accident, but rather because I spent some time in Budapest and made a full recovery, which was like a victory for me and the people here felt part of that victory,”
he added.
The Hungarian Grand Prix once again is going to be a very special race for the Ferrari driver and once again, he is hoping to score the best possible results for his team.
Ferrari are currently at their peak in terms of performance in 2011 as Fernando Alonso recently scored his first victory followed by a 2nd place finish. He is now in a solid 3rd place in the drivers’ standings while Massa is in 6th
and is way behind the championship leader Sebastian Vettel in terms of points.
