Ferrari driver Felipe Massa supports DRS ban on the Eau Rouge at Spa-Francorchamps – Formula 1
Ferrari’s Felipe Massa has recently praised International Automobile Federation’s (FIA) decision of banning the Drag Reduction System for Eau Rouge which is turn 2 of the legendary Spa-Francorchamps where the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix is expected to take
place this weekend.
“I have been following the discussion regarding the use of DRS at the Eau Rouge corner and I think banning its use there for the whole weekend is the right decision. As racing drivers, we would always try and use DRS there and that could lead to an accident,
because of the particular nature of the corner. So, just as was the case in the tunnel in Monaco, I think this is the best solution,” Massa told the media.
The officials recently revealed that the drivers will not be allowed to use DRS at that turn since it might get a bit dangerous as the drivers already push to the limit there. Since it is an uphill curve rather than a straight, using DRS might be unsafe
at the Eau Rouge.
However, this ban is just for the race and it means that the drivers will be allowed to use the device during the practice sessions and qualifying.
The upcoming race is going to be very important for the top running teams of the sport as there are just 8 races left in the 2011 Formula 1 season and McLaren and Ferrari need to win most of these races in order to close in on Red Bull Racing Team.
For Red Bull on the other hand, they must stay reliable and score some good points consistently in order to maintain their lead in both the constructors’ and drivers’ standings.
Felipe Massa is going to play a major role in these upcoming races as he is already out of the drivers’ championship run as a result of which, he would have to help his teammate Fernando Alonso in closing in on Sebastian Vettel’s lead in the drivers’ championship.
His future is also quite uncertain at the moment as there are rumours that the team might replace him with a ‘younger and more talented driver’ in order to achieve the best possible results.
