Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso: I am not racing to make friends – Formula 1 news
Ferrari Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has said that he is racing to achieve many titles in the sport and is not concerned about making friends.
The Spanish driver admitted that he is not in the most popular sport but he is still happy about having the maximum experience of his sport.
In the upcoming Formula 1 season, Alonso will start his second stint with the Ferrari team. It was a pleasant surprise for him when the team confirmed his presence in 2011 season. However, he said, “I am in no hurry to go; here, I even enjoy finishing second,
eighth and 23rd.”
The 29-year-old Alonso is not satisfied from his profession because he considers that the Formula 1 sport is not pure.
He went on to say, “It's not just racing; F1 is also very much business and with other interests, it's not a competition, pure and simple. Cars are not equal; the rules are not equal for all. But we know this and accept it because this is perhaps some of
the charm of Formula One.”
Regarding his previous year’s performance with the Renault team, he stated that the 2009 year was the worst one for him because he dropped his performance level during the campaign. However, Alonso managed a podium finish at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Alonso said that the 2004 and 2005 seasons were full of enjoyment with the well-developed F1 cars but the Michelin and Bridgestone tyres were the problem. He added that the war between the two tyre-suppliers made them a couple of seconds faster.
Other than his car performance over the season, Alonso also said that when he started his career with Minardi, he also had the option of going to Ferrari back then.
He said, “The offer was to go there and then maybe be a Ferrari tester, or maybe not and I'll have to return to F3000, it did not guarantee anything, while Renault were giving me a better opportunity.”
Ferrari’s progress was decent in the pre-season winter testing and they are expected to do well in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
