Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso: We are determined to fight back in the season – Formula 1 news
The two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has said that his team Ferrari have the will to fight back and turn the tables on Red Bull Racing Team and McLaren in the ongoing 2011 season.
The Italian team has so far failed to finish on the podium since the beginning of the campaign.
“It was definitely not the start of the season we were hoping for, for us and all our fans. Fifty points between the two of us is not much and we know our performance is not good enough at the moment, but we are aware that this can change very quickly,”
Alonso told the media.
The team had a very good pre-season testing period statistically and at first, it seemed that Mercedes GP and Ferrari were going to be the only two teams to challenge Red Bull Racing Team for the titles as McLaren were not doing well back then.
However, McLaren bounced back at the season opening race of the 2011 Formula 1 season and gave a much better performance than Mercedes and Ferrari as Lewis Hamilton scored the second position behind Sebastian Vettel.
Alonso believes that his team has the potential to make a return and probably compete alongside the top running teams of the sport.
“I trust in the team: I know what it's made of and I can feel the will to fight back from everyone at Maranello. In the past I have experienced, first as an opponent and then as an insider how capable the Scuderia is of staging a comeback,” said Alonso.
He added that the team had to go through a similar situation in 2010 but they bounced back and fought until the very last race for the title. Alonso was leading the championship ahead of the two Red Bull drivers and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren but lost his
way at the grand finale of the season in Abu Dhabi.
As a result, the team is being realistic and since the season has just begun, there is a chance for Ferrari to improve their performance and hopefully compete for the titles actively alongside McLaren and Red Bull.
