Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso admits Red Bull were too quick at Spa – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has admitted that Red Bull Racing were a bit too quick for his team as a result of which the championship leaders scored a 1-2 at this past weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix which took place at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps.
Despite the fact that Sebastian Vettel has increased his lead by another 25 points, Alonso claims that Ferrari are taking things very realistically and the championship is clearly not in their hands as a result of which they are reliant on Red Bull’s mistakes
for the rest of the season which he admitted is not possible.
“But we are very realistic, knowing that the championship chances are not in our hands. They need to make big, big mistakes and have big problems if we want to win the championship, so we'll try to enjoy every Sunday, every race, and try to do our best,”
he said.
Other than that, he stated that RBR were extremely fast despite the fact that they were going through some tyre degradation issues which proves that defeating the reigning world champions is becoming extremely difficult for McLaren and Ferrari.
Both teams headed to the Belgian Grand Prix with high hopes since they were dominating the race weekends before this weekend. However, one can expect anything in Formula 1 and RBR were at their best.
“I think compared to the gap we had yesterday obviously it's more difficult every race we have 25 points less available, one race less and the gap increases even more because they keep winning,” said the Spaniard.
Nevertheless, it was an extremely disappointing race for McLaren as well and now Vettel’s closest rival is Mark Webber who still has a shot at the title since there are still 7 races left in the 2011 Formula 1 season. If he keeps performing like he did at
Spa, then the reigning world champion might have a competitive challenger before the end of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Vettel is currently 92 points ahead of Webber and 102 points ahead of Fernando Alonso in the drivers’ championship.
