Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso claims British Grand Prix turning point of 2011 Formula 1 season
The two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has said that the British Grand Prix is going to be the turning point of the 2011 season as the teams will come up with some major upgrades.
However, he added that the fans should not expect miracles this weekend.
“Everything depends on the car. If the car is equipped to win races, there is enough time to come back. But being on average one second behind Red Bull on all the times makes it impossible to come back. Therefore, right now, we are awaiting an important
improvement to the car,” said the Spaniard.
The 2011 Formula 1 season has been a one way ride as Red Bull Racing have been dominating since the beginning of the season and it seems that they are unbeatable at the moment. The qualifying pace of Red Bull is around 5 tenths faster than their rivals Ferrari
and McLaren but their racing pace is pretty much equal.
Nevertheless, it is expected that the off-throttle Blown Diffusers will be banned starting from the British Grand Prix which might cost Red Bull some valuable time. However, this ban is not going to change much though as Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing
have taken a sufficient lead in both the drivers’ and constructors’ standings which might not be catchable this season.
Ferrari are hoping for a good result at the upcoming race but both McLaren and Ferrari have recently revealed that if they do not perform up to the mark at the upcoming couple of races, they would have to call their 2011 run off and start focusing on their
2012 cars.
“If we manage to be at the front, it means we have a very competitive car for what remains of the year, but if we are still so far behind, it will be difficult, and we will have to fight for partial grands prix victories: podiums, fastest laps and those
types of more secondary things,” he said.
However, Fernando claims that some important upgrades might enable Ferrari to win races starting from the upcoming British Grand Prix after which the championship might be chaseable.
