Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso concedes title after 2011 Italian Grand Prix result – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that winning the 2011 championship is impossible for the team after the Italian Grand Prix which was held on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at the Monza racetrack.
Alonso added that Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel is now too far from them in the 2011 title fight, so he does not think they can beat Red Bull in the last stages of the ongoing Formula 1 season.
The Spaniard talked to the media and mentioned that they will try to enjoy every race in the remainder of the ongoing season. In addition, he stated that the Maranello-based outfit will now try to fight for a second position in the championship in the upcoming
race weekends.
After the Friday Free Practice sessions, the Ferrari driver successfully secured a fourth place for the 2011 Italian GP in the qualifying round on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Monza.
Alonso was 16.9 seconds off the pace of Vettel, who was the 2011 Italian Grand Prix winner.
After struggling on the soft and medium compounds, the 30-year-old driver came at the third place in the final race classification at Monza.
However, Alonso impressed the team’s fans present at the Monza racetrack by taking a podium position.
Talking to reporters, Alonso said, “I think we cannot make a big thing about the medium tyre or our performance with different types of tyres. That’s not a particular problem but we were less competitive than Red Bull and McLaren.”
He added, “If we made a good start and found ourselves first, leading the race, that was not our real position, so sooner or later, with one tyre, with another tyre, on lap 15 or lap 45, they should overtake us, as they did and that’s the reality.”
After taking part in 13 rounds of the ongoing season, Alonso is sitting at the second place with 172 points ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button in the 2011 drivers’ championship.
The next round of the ongoing season, the 2011 Singapore Grand Prix will take place on September 25, 2011.
Let’s see how Alonso manages his race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit following his third position in the Italian Grand Prix.
