Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso goes through a very stressful Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1
The two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso had a great start to the Spanish Grand Prix as he led the race until his first pit stop but unfortunately, finished in 5th place in the end behind Mark Webber’s RB7 after a very “stressful
race.”
The Spanish Grand Prix had a cracking start with Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton trying to attack the two Red Bull drivers. Hamilton failed as he took the outside line while Alonso cleverly took the inside line before reaching turn one as a result of
which he got ahead of both of the Red Bull drivers.
“The best bit of the race was obviously the start. We have worked so much on this area and you could see the outcome. It was fantastic to see the crowd cheering in the grandstands!” said Alonso.
However, the Spaniard’s performance started to decline after the 3rd pit stop after which he lost the lead to Sebastian Vettel. From that point onwards, the race was pretty much dominated by him until the end.
“It was very stressful having them [Vettel, Webber and Hamilton] filling my mirrors all the time and we tried as much as possible to copy or anticipate their moves. That meant doing over the half the race on the hards, which penalised us heavily and made
the gap bigger than it is in reality,” said Alonso.
He added that Ferrari lacked aerodynamic downforce which was required for Circuit de Catalunya due to which the pace of McLaren and Red Bull Racing team was evidently quicker.
Alonso believes that his team should focus and evaluate its mistakes in order to try its best to improve the car, as he still believes that he can win the title.
The Spaniard is currently 67 points behind the championship leader and reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel. However, the upcoming races are going to get even more technical and tough and Alonso believes that he can improve and probably score much better
performances in the future during the European phase of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
