Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso hoping for podium finish at Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that he is hoping to score a podium position this weekend at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Alonso thinks the team is in a much better shape this weekend than it was before at the Turkish Grand Prix.
Alonso scored his first podium finish of the season at the Istanbul circuit after finishing in 3rd place behind the two Red Bull Racing Team drivers. Sebastian Vettel scored his 3rd win in just 4 races this season after starting from
the first place on the grid.
However, Ferrari have been improving in terms of reliability but their pace during the qualifying sessions has been pretty much the same as Alonso has a perfect score of 4 5th place starts so far this season.
The Spaniard believes that Ferrari can get closer to Red Bull and McLaren during the races and this weekend, the team is hoping for the best as they tested some new parts during the Friday free practice sessions of his home grand prix.
“We tried a lot of new things today and now we must extrapolate the information from all this work and select the best parts to put on the car for tomorrow. My first impression is favourable: I think we have made a step forward,” he said.
He added that this season is quite unpredictable and it is always difficult to predict anything after the free practice sessions. However, Alonso thinks that his team still needs to improve in order to compete alongside Red Bull and McLaren in terms of pace.
“We still have to work on the set-up: today we had too many things to test and we did not have time to make too many changes. I think the chances of fighting for a podium finish are even more likely here than they were in Turkey,” said the Spaniard.
The qualifying session of the upcoming race is going to be vital for Ferrari and if Alonso starts from row 1 or row 2, he has good chances to finish on the podium.
