Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso hoping for some improvements in 2011 Formula 1 season
The two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has recently admitted that he is also behind his team’s decision that they are now going to take a more radical and innovative approach with the design of their car for the upcoming races of the 2011
season.
The team showed some major improvement this weekend as Alonso finished in 3rd place scoring the first podium for his team. However, his performance did not improve in terms of pace since he qualified in 5th position and this is the
4th time in 4 races that the Spaniard has scored this position in the qualifying session.
The team’s head designer Nicholas Tombazis admitted that the team has realised that this is because of a various amount of reasons that the team has not been reactive or aggressive enough during the development stages of their 2011 run.
“Now we are reacting and we want to rediscover the spirit of innovation which maybe we have lost a bit over the past two years,” he added.
Ferrari upgraded their car before the Turkish Grand Prix as a result of which the team has improved their car’s reliability. Because of that, the Spaniard scored the podium position for his team. Alonso agreed that he was behind the gamble his team took
in order to improve their car and it seems that it paid off for them.
“I think Ferrari has to try to change a little bit the way we work, risking more and being more innovative. From now on we have to start inventing. We will not give up so soon but we are aware of the difficulty of having this championship,” said the Spaniard.
However, the team’s technical director Aldo Costa has warned his team that it is going to take some time to score race winning performances in 2011.
“Probably in Barcelona we will take another step forward. But we will have to wait for some more races to fight for victory,” said Costa.
According to a statement by Adrian Newey, Red Bull’s lead technical designer, Lotus Renault GP have impressed him the most as their exhaust system is quite impressive while Ferrari have produced a conventional car this year. McLaren on the other hand have
worked quite hard on their car especially its side pods.
Alonso is currently 42 points behind Sebastian Vettel who is currently leading the championship with 93 points. Vettel is currently 34 points ahead of his closest rival Lewis Hamilton and it seems that he is at a level of his own this season since he has
a perfect pole position record this season up until now.
