Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso lauds performance in Spanish Grand Prix qualifiers – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has hailed his performance in the Spanish Grand Prix qualifiers and said that his lap was to the limit of the car and himself.
Alonso added that although Ferrari have made it to the second row of the grid in Barcelona, still it was hard to fight with the Red Bulls in the front.
Despite Ferrari’s new rear wing which was banned by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), Alonso did a fastest lap time of 1 minute and 21.964 seconds which was to the limit regarding the developments of the Ferrari team.
The Spaniard commented, “I did a perfect lap: I reckon that if I tried to repeat it twenty times, I could not do better. When you do a lap like that it's hard to put into words what one feels: always being on the limit, in every corner is a really special
feeling for a driver.”
Alonso added that Ferrari are delighted to make it to the second row of the grid but still huge developments are required if the Scarlet team is to beat the roaring Red Bull.
The Spaniard gave his home crowd a good show as he did a perfect lap to split the two McLarens up in front. Alonso’s fastest time was just 0.003 seconds slower than Lewis Hamilton which marks the awakening of the Ferrari giant.
Still Alonso was almost a second slower than the Red Bulls and believe that on Sunday, it will be tough to get around.
“So far, in the races we have gone well than in qualifying and so I think we can be in the fight for the podium,” added Alonso.
Alonso further added that apart from Red Bull, McLaren will also be the team to watch out for as the silver cars get the perfect race start. Hamilton has one extra set of soft tyres compared to the Spaniard, which the Brit saved in the qualifiers and will
use them in the race.
Alonso’s teammate Felipe Massa will start the race from eighth position on the grid of the Spanish Grand Prix scheduled for May 22, 2011.
