Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso satisfied with Q3 performance at Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that he drove a perfect lap in the qualifying session of the Spanish Grand Prix in order to qualify for the fourth place behind his former teammate Lewis Hamilton in row two.
Alonso has been struggling to perform during the qualifying sessions this season so far as he started all four races of the 2011 Formula 1 season from 5th place on the grid.
He was 2.5 seconds off the pace during the final free practice session but this result proved to him that his team is improving its performance. Alonso was just 3 thousandths of a second slower than Lewis Hamilton’s time which is a huge improvement for his
team since they were off the pace by more than 2 tenths of second before this.
“I did a perfect lap: I reckon that if I tried to repeat it twenty times, I could not do better! When you do a lap like that it's hard to put into words what one feels: always being on the limit, in every corner is a really special feeling for a driver,”
he said.
The Spaniard has stated that the team was unable to score some good results during the free practice sessions of his home grand prix since Ferrari made some unsuccessful changes to their car. Nevertheless, he is happy with this result and is hoping to make
the best of it during the race.
“I am very happy with this result, because we have never made it to the second row this year. Sure, pole position is still a long way off: today, Red Bull was once again out of reach and we must work hard to try and get closer,” said the Spaniard.
Ferrari are looking good this weekend and since Alonso is starting from row two for the first time this season, it seems that his chances of scoring a podium are now higher than they were before and he can even score a victory if he performs well at his
home race.
