Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso says Monte Carlo hides flaws of their car – Formula 1 news
The two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has said that Ferrari’s car suits Monte Carlo as the circuit hides the car’s flaws and highlights its strengths.
“In Monaco it's mainly a question of having a good feel for the car: the more the driver has, the harder he can push, lap after lap. It seems we are a bit more competitive than elsewhere, although one has to adopt the usual caution linked to the unknown
factor of how much fuel the others were running,” said the Spaniard.
Alonso scored the fastest time of the second free practice session on Thursday and proved that Ferrari have the ability to take on Red Bull Racing and McLaren in terms of pace.
The Spaniard scored the second fastest lap time of the first session just around a tenths slower than Sebastian Vettel’s fastest time of the session but it was quite evident that Ferrari were looking much better this weekend.
Alonso believes that since Ferrari’s car is weak in the aerodynamics area, Monaco is the perfect circuit for the team in order to compete alongside McLaren and Red Bull Racing team.
“On a track with the lowest average speed, some weaknesses are hidden by other factors, such as the mechanical side and the engine,” said the former Formula 1 champion.
Other than that, he added that he felt very comfortable throughout the day and he was feeling the urge to push even harder since the car was reacting according to his requirements and likings.
Nevertheless, Ferrari are pleased with their drivers’ performance and are hoping to score the best results of their 2011 run so far.
The qualifying session of the Monaco Grand Prix is going to be quite interesting as McLaren and Ferrari are looking pretty strong this weekend while Red Bull Racing Team on the other hand is struggling to find pace. Let’s see how the weekend transpires for
the scarlet car.
