Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso says rule changes did not affect performance much – Formula 1 news
The two-time former world champion Fernando Alonso has said that the rule changes regarding the off-throttle Blown Diffusers did not have a lot of impact on each team’s respective performance.
Ferrari had a pretty good overall weekend during the British Grand Prix at Silverstone as Felipe Massa scored some pretty good results during the final practice session. Later, Fernando Alonso secured the 3rd place while Felipe Massa secured the
4th place on the grid for the race.
“I don't think it's a big factor. We saw one McLaren fighting for the podium until the last moment. We saw Red Bull, Ferrari for the other positions on the podium and, as we saw 15 days ago in Valencia, I was second,” said Alonso when asked about the new
rule changes.
One has to admit that the situation during the race and the qualifying session was pretty much the same even though a major change in order was expected this weekend as a result of the rule changes.
Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull were still where they were since the past couple of races and Ferrari’s win at the British Grand Prix was more dependent on the team’s race strategy and performance rather than the rule changes.
Other than Alonso, the reigning world champion and current championship leader Sebastian Vettel also believes that these rule changes did not have much impact on the performance of the cars.
“I think it's hard to measure for us, firstly from a data point of view and also from a feeling point of view, because this is a different track compared to the tracks we've been to previously. To really find out, you have to test one thing against another,
so on-off,” he said.
Nevertheless, McLaren and Ferrari are improving quite impressively with each race and now it is a matter of consistency for the top running teams of the sport.
McLaren and Ferrari must finish each race on the podium for the remainder of the 2011 Formula 1 season in order to challenge for the titles.
