Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso says strategy is important during the race – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 team Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that various strategies are important for approaching a race in the 2011 season however, two or three races are enough to pick the most suitable strategy.
He added if the driver is not able to apply the strategy positively, he will definitely lose the race as a result.
No doubt, Alonso has a highly competitive car in the Formula 1 arena. He admitted that in Formula 1 sport, the quickest and best car wins the championship at the end of the races. Despite of his passion for the title, there is a possibility that the tyre
degradation will push down his performance during the races.
The Spaniard said the best strategies are very important in the upcoming races, as different compounds of Pirelli rubber might create a tough competition in the 2011 season.
He said, “But over 20 races or 19 races you can make mistakes one time in strategy or you can do a very good strategy one time but not every race, so in the end the most important thing will be to have the quickest car and we are working for that.”
He told the media that the competition was very tough in 2010 and at that time nobody knew how to approach their races.
He went on to say, “There are many possibilities this year. It is not like last year so that will be the most important thing. Sometimes it is better to sacrifice some laps that you know you are very slow at the end of the run, but maybe you make one stop
less. It is a difficult call and a difficult judgment that we will need to make. We will need to be very open and very flexible in every race.”
On the other hand, Red Bull boss Christian Horner admitted that the tyres degradation has increased the pit stops as these were tested over the winter testing sessions.
Horner appreciated their drivers’ 2010 performance, as strategically, they were very sharp and confident in their races.
Other than him, Mercedes GP principal Ross Brawn predicted a minimum of three pit stops per race in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
He went on to say, “It depends on the circumstances but if your model shows four pit stops are faster as a race and you think you can drive to the speed available then you could see four-pit stop races.”
The 2011 season condition is still unpredictable until its first race that is going to start in a few days in Australia.
