Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso says they need fastest car for Monaco Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that his team will have to introduce the fastest car for the Monaco Grand Prix if they want to win the 2011 title.
He also mentioned that Ferrari have to fight for this season’s championship because they have already lost too many points at the start of the season.
The team had a poor start to the 2011 Formula 1 season, as both the drivers, Alonso and Felipe Massa failed to impress in the beginning of the campaign. However, Alonso seems to be improving since the last three races of season.
At the recently held Spanish Grand Prix, the Spaniard was hoping to take his first win of the season. However, despite leading the pack at the beginning of the race much to the delight of the home crowd, he eventually finished the race in fifth place, one
lap behind the top four drivers.
Alonso has demanded the fastest car for the Monaco GP, as he believes the upgrades will noticeably improve their car and bring better results for them.
He admitted that the team drivers can produce points for this season’s championship, if Ferrari provided them the best car in Monaco.
The 29-year-old driver discussed Ferrari’s performance in ongoing season. He said, “I remain optimistic that we can turn it around, but it is true also that we need immediately to have a competitive car. At the moment we are struggling too much be a title
contender.”
The team was somewhat disappointed with Massa’s performance in the Barcelona GP, as he had to retire from the race due to issues with the gearbox of his car. This issue has been fixed for the Monaco Grand Prix and now, the team is expecting a productive
run from him.
The two-time world champion is confident for the sixth round of the season. He said, “I think Monaco is so different compared to any other circuit that we always see some surprises here. I remember the Williams being very quick always here in 2004/2005/2006
and even 2008 I think Nico [Rosberg] did a very good race here, and I am confident.”
Let’s see to what an extent does the scarlet car manage to impress at the weekend. The action from Monte Carlo begins Thursday with the first practice session.
