Ferrari favourite for 2012 Canadian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Ferrari are undoubtedly one of the most favourite contenders for 2012 Canadian Grand Prix which is to be held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal on June 10.
The Scarlet team struggled throughout the pre-season testing programme with creating an understanding about F2012. Where on one hand, their technical director, Pat Fry ruled out the possibility of a podium finish in the season opener, on the other hand,
they clearly expressed that they would face difficulties in the first few races.
However, their driver, Fernando Alonso has successfully limited the damage and has shown remarkable performances in the season so far as he is currently leading the drivers’ championship with 76 points.
Moreover, he is 3 points ahead of Red Bull Racing pair of drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.
He secured an impressive fifth place finish in the season opener after qualifying from 12th grid position and claimed an incredible victory in the second race in rainy conditions. Furthermore, he secured podium finishes in the last two races.
Meanwhile, his teammate, Felipe Massa who could only score 2 points in the first five grands prix has also performed quite convincingly in the last race as he came 6th after starting from 7th grid position.
Besides, the Brazilian driver is presently at 14th place in the drivers’ rankings with 10 points. Furthermore, he is 3 points ahead of Nico Hulkenberg of Force India and 5 points behind Bruno Senna of Williams.
The Spaniard said that his target is to score some reasonable points in each and every race while he said that it is very important for him to perform well in the Canadian GP as he believes it will decide their performance for the remaining season.
“Leading the championship is only the beginning, it’s a starting point, because the ultimate target is leading the championship after the final race in Brazil in November,” said Alonso. “Hopefully this weekend we will see a competitive Ferrari and that will
be very important for us, not just for this race but also for the rest of the season.”
At present, the Italian team is at third place in the constructors’ championship with 86 points. Moreover, they are 25 points ahead of Mercedes and 22 points behind their main rival, McLaren.
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has admired all the efforts which the team has made in the season so far after facing issues during the start. In addition, he said that he is very much pleased with the performance of Alonso while he also admired Massa
who bounced back in Monte Carlo.
Nonetheless, he said that they still need to keep on making the necessary advancements and the substantial preparations so as to improve the pace of their car for the approaching races in order to fight for the championship title this year.
“However, there is a lot of work to do, because I am not yet satisfied. Everyone must give their all. We still need to improve the car and I am very happy with the way the team has reacted,” he said.
